Saga Sites Private Day Tour from Reykjavik with a Personal Guide

Enjoy the natural pearls of West Iceland and learn more about three of Iceland's best known authors and poets; the viking and poet Egill Skallagrimsson, saga writer Snorri Sturluson and Nobel-award winning author Halldor Laxnes.  You will see some beautiful waterfalls, a powerful geothermal spring, enjoy the scenery of mountains and fjords and have the option of going horseback riding.

Your driver guide will pick you up in a private car at your hotel in Reykjavik.  Driving out of the city you head into Mosfellsveit, where Nobel-award winning author Halldor Laxness lived.  His old home, Gljufrasteinn, where he wrote most of his work is now a museum.  Those wanting to learn more about the writer can take a guided tour of Gljufrasteinn.

Optional: You can go on a 2-hour horseback riding tour in Mosfellssveit.  The Icelandic horse is short but sturdy and known for its five distinctive gaits, including the tolt and flying pace.  You'll pre provided with a horse that suits your previous riding experience, and enjoy the beautiful green surroundings of Mosfellsveit.

Driving through the Hvalfjordur fjord tunnel to the town of Borgarnes, you visit the Settlement Center exhibition.  The exhibition uses modern multimedia technology and is a lot of fun, as well as interesting.  It focused on Egill Skallagrimsson, one of Iceland's best known vikings.  His family settled and controlled the Borgarfjordur region and he himself was one of the most colourful saga heroes, an intriguing combination of a viking, healer and a poet.  After the exhibition we highly recommend trying the delicious Icelandic waffles in the Settlement Center.

After enjoying lunch in Borgarnes you go to Deildatunguhver, Iceland's most powerful geothermal spring.  Nearby is Hraunfossar, a waterfall that flows out of the lava, and Barnafoss waterfall which flows down a small canyon. 

In the heart of Borgarfjordur fjord is Reykholt, which was the home of Snorri Sturluson.  There you visit Snorrastofa where you see antiques dating from Snorri's time.  An outdoor geothermal pool, hot water and steam channels, old farmstead and passageway.  You also visit the old Reykholt church, built in 1887.

On the way back to Reykjavik you drive the scenic Hvalfjordur fjord, where you enjoy the view of tall mountains that surround the fjord.  Your driver guide will drop you off at your hotel or a restaurant of your choice in the afternoon.
