Rent an intermediate 4x4 SUV for a self drive vacation in Iceland

The Toyota RAV4 is a good option for a 4x4 in Iceland although it does not have a low gear box. It´s easy drive, automatic and full time 4WD, it´s a good choice for Icelandic roads in both summer and winter. Since it´s a 4WD you are allowed to take it on the mountain roads (F-roads) but note that´s it´s not an off-road vehicle and does not have a low gear box. If you want to drive the most difficult mountain tracks you should consider a Land Cruiser or a Land Rover - or safer yet, take a Super-Jeep tour and let the experts do the river crossings.
The Toyota Rav4 is a great car to drive on the main roads, including the ring road around Iceland.

At Iceland Private Tours we belief in honesty and good service, therefore we will not hide the following in the fine print. To our knowledge the following rules apply at all Icelandic car rentals:

• No insurance covers crossing unbrigded rivers and streams.
• No insurance covers the undercarriage of the vehicle.

Basically it means if you loose or damage the rental car in river, you´re liable.
If you damage the undercarriage you are liable. Keep this in mind when planning your self drive. If you plan to visit places like Thorsmork Nature Reserve where you need to cross about 20 streams and glacial rivers , you might be saving money by going on one of our Super Jeep tours rather than risking having have to pay for a new 4x4.
